DT: Sewing Butterflies
After discussing as a class how a good sewn butterfly toy should be made, the children designed their own. They picked their felt and wool colours, sequins, antennae and whether they wanted google eyes. The children carefully used a whip stitch or running stitch to sew the two pieces of felt together. About three quarters of the way round, they added the stuffing so it wasn't too flat or too plump, then they continued sewing. Some children needed to judge when to stop sewing so they could change their wool for a new, longer piece. The next task was to add the sequins so they created a symmetrical pattern.
A growth mindset was required for this sewing task; the children persevered and should their amazing resilience! Have a look at the beautiful sewn butterflies below.
